Individual Differences in Deception and Deception Detection

چکیده
We are building a new corpus of deceptive and nondeceptive speech, using American English and Mandarin Chinese adult native speakers, to investigate individual and cultural differences in acoustic, prosodic, and lexical cues to deception. Here, we report on the role of personality factors using the NEO-FFI (Neuroticism-Extraversion-Openness Five Factor Inventory), gender, ethnicity and confidence ratings on subjects’ ability to deceive and to detect deception in others. We report significant correlations for each factor with one or more aspects of deception. These are important for the study of trust, cognition, and multi-modal information processing. Keywords-Deception; cross-linguistic; personality.

Identifying Individual Differences in Gender, Ethnicity, and Personality from Dialogue for Deception Detection
When automatically detecting deception, it is important to model individual differences across speakers. We explore the automatic identification of individual traits such as gender, native language, and personality, using acoustic-prosodic and lexical features from an initial non-deceptive dialogue. We also explore predicting success at deception and at deception detection, using the same featu...

Deception is a very common phenomenon, especially human communication, and people have been interested in how to accurately detect deception for much of human history. In recent years, detecting deception has became a huge point of interest for many different fields of research, such as business, jurisprudence, law enforcement, and national security. Deception and its detection is a complicated...
متن کاملCan Ordinary People Detect Deception After All?
The tipping point framework of lie detection posits that people can, and do, accurately detect deception. This framework pinpoints three circumstances that aid accuracy: (i) using methods of measurement that circumvent controlled, conscious cognition; (ii) when individual differences or situational factors portend potent risks to lie detection failure, such as in high-stakes or threatening sett...
متن کامل“You can't kid a kidder”: association between production and detection of deception in an interactive deception task
Both the ability to deceive others, and the ability to detect deception, has long been proposed to confer an evolutionary advantage. Deception detection has been studied extensively, and the finding that typical individuals fare little better than chance in detecting deception is one of the more robust in the behavioral sciences. Surprisingly, little research has examined individual differences...
متن کاملDeception awareness improves P300-based deception detection in concealed information tests.
We asked if increased awareness of deception enhanced P300-based detection of concealed information with two groups: 1) Control subjects saw a randomized series of either rare probes (subject home towns), frequent irrelevants (other towns), and rare targets, which are irrelevant stimuli but requiring Button 1 responses. Probes and non-target irrelevants required Button 2 responses. Controls wer...
